SOFT MACHINE se formó en 1966 por Robert WYATT, Mike RATLEDGE, Kevin AYERS y Daevid ALLEN (GONG). WYATT ya había trabajado con ALLEN en el DAEVID ALLEN TRIO en 1963, donde RATLEDGE se les unía a veces para echarse un palomazo y AYERS, bueno, él venía de tocar con WILDE FLOWERS en 1964.
A estos musicos innovadores se les ocurrió la idea de hacer música para la mente en lugar de hacer música para el cuerpo. Su estilo es bastante ácido, pero con una libertar de expresión increíble, además de progresiones extraordinarias. Cuando Robert WYATT inventó este concepto en 1965, SOFT MACHINE se perfilaba como el dolor de cabeza más fuerte para PINK FLOYD, y es que la psicodelia de su sonido, la experimentación y una música sintética, lo ubicó como uno de los grupos más importantes y revolucionarios de finales de los '60.
Al principio su estilo iba de la mano con fuertes elementos jazz y un órgano ácido, siendo lo más importante la calidad de la batería de WYATT. En sus dos primeros discos la definición musical se dio así, sufriendo un cambio drástico en su alineación desde el tercero, lo que sin duda ocasionó su nueva línea musical. Kevin AYERS y Daevid ALLEN abandonan en 1969, permitiendo así la entrada de Elton DEAN† en saxofón, quien junto a otro gran músico que vendría después, Allan HOLDSWORTH, resurgirían a principios de los 2000 con una propuesta más audible pero con un triste inicio: el grupo HARDWARE.
